It’s not quite big enough to transport people, or even Chihuahuas for that matter, but the GFS has interested the military.  Its name stands for “Geoff’s Flying Saucer” and was built by 67-year-old Geoff Hatten in his shed in Peterborough, England.  Using the Coanda effect, it can take off and land vertically and move from side to side fluidly, just like the UFOs in every classic alien movie.  Its most probable use is for surveillance, as it can fly through doors and other tight spaces.

The biggest drawback: it’s terribly loud.  So, we still haven’t been able to invent a science-fiction caliber flying saucer, but this one is a good starting point.
