The HD format wars have begun to settle a possible winner, and my prediction is correct for the time being: Blu-Ray sales are beating HD-DVD by a margin of 40%.  This number is provided by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment based on the sales of HD titles since January.

The biggest milestone that has been reached thus far is the sale of Casino Royale, which reached 100,000 copies just two weeks after its release, being the first HD format to sell such a high volume.  This comes only 9 months after Blu-Ray’s debut.  In comparison, it took 11 months for the DVD format to reach this number.

For whatever reason, it seems like I constantly see commercials advertising the release of Blu-Ray movies, but none for HD-DVD.  In fact, there have been one or two where only Blu-Ray was mentioned, not even DVD.  Whether that’s based on consumer demand or consumer demand is based on it, I’m not sure; though I could guess that it’s a result of strategic marketing.
