There are some really strange products that go out on the shelves every day.  Some of them make you shudder; others make you cringe; yet others make you laugh.  This is a tribute to the weirdest products from the year 2006.  Who knows…maybe you’ll find your next must-buy invention!

Sideways Books 10. Sideways Books - These are supposed to allow you to read more easily as you’re lying on your side in bed.  If you want to read them while sitting up, you’re going to have to deal with an awkward, sideways-printed book.  Also, I’m not exactly sure how that woman’s head is connected to her body…perhaps it’s a side effect of reading a sideways book.

Darth Vader Umbrella 9. Darth Vader Umbrella - I’ll let the description speak for itself: “This weapon is your life– and an umbrella! Modeled with a grip based on Darth Vader’s own lightsaber, this Japanese import is an incredibly limited edition item with only a few units being imported to the United States. Don’t pass on this opportunity to get your very own “Rain Lightsaber” featuring artwork of Darth Vader amidst rivers of burning lava. This collectible piece of nylon rain gear is 40-inches across, and features an automatic telescoping action. For added protection, this umbrella features a red nylon sleeve– so it looks like a real lightsaber when you aren’t using it!”

Dog Treat Launcher 8. Dog Treat Launcher - “Shoots a dog treat about 12 feet away”.  My question is this: haven’t you heard of THROWING a dog treat?  If you can’t throw a dog treat at least 12 feet away, you have serious issues.

Doggy Doorbell 7. Doggy Doorbell - When nature calls, this device will supposedly allow your dog to alert you by ringing the doorbell.  Unfortunately he’d probably let it out on your carpet long before he’d figure it out.

Sideways Bike 6. Sideways Bike - This might go hand in hand with a nice sideways book.  “For balancing you use your back and front balance not the sideways balancing that you use in conventional bicycle.  The bike has front and rear steering system which makes it more maneuverable than the conventional single steer bicycles.”  I don’t believe anyone could ever get me on one of these things; I value my life too much.

Zombie Portraits 5. Zombie Portraits - Wow, this is exactly how I’ve always wanted to see myself … as a dead, disgusting zombie with rotting flesh.  If you want one, just send in upload the photo of your choice, wait for the Zombie picture to be delivered, hang it up in your living room, and you have a wonderful conversation piece.

Pierced Eyeglasses 4. Pierced Eyeglasses - I wear contacts usually, but occasionally wear glasses when my eyes are tired.  I must say that I’m glad that I can take my glasses off when I want to.  Unfortunately, that’s not possible with this cross between acupuncture and eyewear.  Yes, you saw the picture right … those glasses are connected via a piercing between his eyes.

Doggie Thong 3. Doggie Thong - Supposed to minimize stench from dogs.  No further explanation required.  All I can say is that I would never buy one.  Ever.

Octodog 2. Octodog - Convert your hot dogs into octopus-shaped slices.  “What the heck is an Octodog?? Well it’s a new, unique way to make your hot dog. Just insert hot dog into the Octodog push down and get the craziest looking hotdog you’ve ever seen. So simple, yet so fun. Perfect for family BBQs, kids love them.”  If you’re trying to teach your kids to stop playing with their food, keep this product as far away from your home as possible.

And, the weirdest product from 2006 is…

Chocolate Maggots 1. Yummy White Chocolate Maggots - Delicious!  Almost as good as the real thing.  Okay, honestly, I don’t see why anyone would find any appeal in this product (other than mud-stained, nasty children who would probably be eating real maggots anyway).
